Brake system

Brake fluid exchange

with the ATE FB 5EV unit

Why it matters

Why does brake fluid need to be changed?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it gradually absorbs moisture from the air even through a closed system.

Water lowers the boiling point

At a water content of only around 3 % the boiling point drops so far that heavy or prolonged braking can create a vapour bubble in the system. The result is a soft, spongy brake pedal, or even loss of braking effect at the critical moment.

Water causes corrosion

Water in the fluid also corrodes the internal parts of the ABS/ESP unit, the wheel cylinders and the calipers — repairs to these components are among the most expensive on the whole vehicle.

Preventive vehicle maintenance

Preventive vehicle maintenance

Changing the brake fluid regularly at the recommended interval is one of the cheapest forms of prevention on the whole vehicle. We recommend combining it with a regular check of brake pad and disc thickness — together the two checks give a complete picture of the brake system condition.

When to act

When is a brake fluid exchange recommended?

Based on our experience, we recommend an exchange in cases where:

two years have passed since the last change

Most manufacturers prescribe a brake fluid change at regular intervals (usually two years) regardless of how "clean" the fluid looks — its protective properties lose their effect gradually and unnoticed.

the brake pedal is softer or travels further

At a water content of around 3 % the boiling point drops so far that heavy or prolonged braking can create a vapour bubble in the system — the result is a soft, "spongy" pedal, or even loss of braking effect at the critical moment.

the fluid is dark, cloudy or has a high water content

Water in the fluid corrodes the internal parts of the ABS/ESP unit, the wheel cylinders and the calipers — repairs to these components are among the most expensive on the whole vehicle.

ATE equipment and fluid used for the brake fluid exchange

ATE FB 5EV

ATE FB 5EV

An electric unit for filling, flushing and bleeding brake systems, suitable also for modern electronic systems (ABS/ESP). It generates a pulsating flow of fluid for better flushing and bleeding, with adjustable working pressure up to 2.0 bar. Automatic shut-off when the canister empties prevents air from re-entering the system.

ATE brake fluid

ATE brake fluid

The ATE brake fluid we use is selected according to the specification set by the manufacturer of the particular vehicle (DOT 4, or low-viscosity DOT 4 class 6 for vehicles with ESP/ABS).

How it works

How is the brake fluid exchange performed?

The machine brake fluid exchange with the ATE FB 5EV unit keeps your brake system in perfect condition at all times.

  1. Diagnostics — the brake pedal condition is checked, along with a visual inspection of the system for leaks.

  2. The water content of the original brake fluid is measured with a tester.

  3. The level and condition of the fluid in the reservoir are checked.

  4. The ATE FB 5EV unit is connected to the reservoir using a suitable adapter.

  5. The working pressure is set according to the type of brake system in the vehicle.

  6. The old, contaminated fluid is drawn out of the reservoir.

  7. The system is filled with new ATE fluid matching the manufacturer specification.

  8. The circuits are bled and flushed wheel by wheel in the prescribed order.

  9. The colour and cleanliness of the fluid coming out at each wheel are checked continuously.

  10. The reservoir is topped up to the correct level.

  11. The unit is disconnected and a final visual check of all joints for leaks is made.

  12. Test drive and a check of the function and feel of the brake pedal.

  13. A record of the service performed and the recommended date of the next exchange.
