Cooling system

Coolant exchange

with the BG MVP2 unit

Why it matters

Why does coolant need to be changed?

Modern engines run at higher operating temperatures than ever before, which makes the cooling system critical to engine reliability and life.

What happens to ageing coolant

Coolant degrades over time — the additives that protect the system against corrosion are gradually used up. Once that happens, the coolant turns acidic and attacks metal components such as the water pump, radiator and thermostat. The deposits and contaminants formed during degradation also settle on heat transfer surfaces, severely limiting the engine ability to cool effectively.

How it can end

The result can be water pump failure, engine overheating, a damaged cylinder head gasket or even a warped cylinder head. These are among the most expensive repairs on the whole vehicle — and a regular coolant change prevents them.

Preventive vehicle maintenance

Preventive vehicle maintenance

Changing the coolant regularly at the recommended intervals is one of the most effective and at the same time cheapest ways to prevent engine failure. Neglected coolant can irreversibly damage expensive components such as the cylinder head, water pump or radiator within a few years.

When to act

When is a coolant exchange recommended?

Based on our experience, we recommend an exchange in cases where:

the coolant is contaminated or more than 5 years old

The additives that protect the cooling system against corrosion are used up over time and the coolant turns acidic, attacking metal components such as the water pump, radiator and thermostat.

the coolant has not been changed for about 48,000 km

Changing the coolant regularly at the recommended intervals is one of the most effective and cheapest ways to prevent engine failure, so we recommend including it in regular servicing.

the engine runs hotter than usual

Deposits and contaminants formed as the coolant degrades settle on heat transfer surfaces, limiting the engine ability to cool effectively and risking overheating or damage to the cylinder head gasket.

Products used

Products and equipment used for the coolant exchange

BG Universal Cooling System Cleaner

BG Universal Cooling System Cleaner

A cleaning product that, before the exchange itself, removes rust, mineral deposits and other contaminants accumulated in the cooling system and prepares it to be filled with new coolant.

BG Universal Super Cool

BG Universal Super Cool

A product added to the new coolant that protects the system against corrosion, foaming and contamination caused by an acidic environment.

How it works

How is the coolant exchange with the BG MVP2 unit performed?

The coolant exchange service with the BG MVP2 unit, using BG Universal Cooling System Cleaner and BG Universal Super Cool, keeps your cooling system in perfect condition for as long as possible.

  1. Diagnostics — the condition and level of the coolant are checked, along with a visual inspection of the system for leaks.

  2. The coolant is tested for the content of protective additives and for acidity.

  3. The engine operating temperature and the function of the radiator and fan are checked.

  4. The vehicle is prepared — the engine is warmed up to operating temperature.

  5. The BG MVP2 unit is connected to the vehicle cooling circuit.

  6. BG Universal Cooling System Cleaner is applied and circulated through the system for 30 minutes.

  7. Deposits, rust and contaminants are removed during the cleaning cycle.

  8. The exchange process starts — the BG MVP2 unit gradually draws off the worn coolant.

  9. New coolant according to the manufacturer specification is added by the unit at the same time.

  10. A check that the full volume of coolant has been exchanged with no air bubbles left in the system.

  11. BG Universal Super Cool is added to the new fill for long-term protection.

  12. The BG MVP2 unit is disconnected and the coolant level in the expansion tank is checked.

  13. The cooling system is bled.

  14. The joints and hoses are checked for leaks after the service.

  15. Test drive and a final check of the engine operating temperature.
